15-year-old Lara dreams of becoming a ballerina. Her father supports her in everything she does, but there is one obstacle: Lara was born a boy, and her body is giving her a hard time pursuing her dream.

In this beautiful film about the dreams and fears of a transgender girl, director Lukas Dhondt takes us to a world whose inhabitants steer away from the norm in many ways – and confronts us with how tough the consequences of being different can be.

Girl received a lot of praise in Europe, but the reactions on the other side of the Atlantic were quite different. The American reviews were often scathing, and they considered the way in which transgenders were portrayed very problematic.
